There's a similar new German service called TrackKings, that works with three of the four mobile providers in Germany.

See http://mobinauten.blogg.de/eintrag.php?id=177 for more details and if you are within Germany you might try it. At the moment it's still for free.

Well, interesting feature. However I personally think that the LBSes are will not grow too fast in the current situation. The operators are not interested in this as too many location requests make their signaling parts of networks overloaded. But there is a chance on the horizon for LBS. This chance is called GPS. When we'll see more and more GPS-enabled devices on the market we'll see the real boom of LBS. GPS has three big advantages over the current LBS: it's free, it's accurate, it’s a continuous service. That means that one can locate as often as they wish without paying anything to the operators. Then the LBS will be working on the level of IP networks not on the level of operators. Virtually anyone with good idea and an internet server will be able to offer a LBS!!!

At the company I work for we've been testing an HP IPAQ 6515 - Windows Mobile based PDA/smartphone with GPS. We've created a small proof-of-concept application that showed us the Wikipedia articles that are tagged with geo-information closest to the point where the device is located. The user experience was astonishing. Well, at least for me :-) And all this without ANY cooperation with the operator. This is the future...

I think this will be really cool for the younger generation and also be cool just to have as a feature on any phone carrier. I am on the Nextel Network and if they where to pick thid up it would be great. Cool concept tho. i think i seen something like it in europe on tv like 3 years ago.
